Presenter: Professor Timmy Gambin, University of Malta

For over an entire decade, the Sicilian Superintendence of the Sea together with RPM Nautical, has explored the seabed off the Egadi Islands off Trapani. This ambitious and unique project produced some incredible results including, but not limited to, the discovery of numerous bronze rams. Despite the success of the first phases of the project it became clear that a new approach was necessary to survey the site in a more efficient manner. Since 2019, the University of Malta has partnered the Superintendence and RPM - specifically through the deployment of its Automated Underwater Vehicle. This talk will introduce the battle of the Egadi Islands and will also share some highlights and discoveries from the initial phases of the project. The main part of the presentation will cover the methodologies developed in the context of this project, how these complimented existing work and what results have been achieved so far.

Teledyne Webb Research (TWR) and JASCO Applied Sciences have collaborated in the development of a near real-time Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) capability utilizing TWR's slocum glider fitted with JASCO's OceanObserver payload.

This capability was demonstrated in Q3 2018 in the Gulf of St Lawrence, Canada searching for North Atlantic Right Whales. The unique capabilities of this payload when integrated with the Slocum platform will be described.

The Observer payload is applicable to other Teledyne platforms and can be integrated with many Teledyne sensors. JASCO’s ongoing development work with TWR, Reson and ODI will be mentioned.

This talk should be of interest to anyone involved in mitigating the effects of underwater noise on marine environments, underwater acoustics, anti-submarine warfare or the use of Slocum gliders.

Speaker bio:
John Moloney is the Engineering and Business Development Manager for JASCO Applied Sciences in Dartmouth, NS.

Join our host, Ben Allsup, for a closer look at the recent completion of a 4-year journey that circumnavigated the Atlantic Ocean in four legs, a first for an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The Slocum Glider “Silbo” was deployed in 2016 from Cape Cod and returned from its epic adventure in late June of 2020. Learn about each leg of the journey, the glider’s purpose, maintenance of this long duration glider, and the many programs and lives it touched along the way. From testing new equipment and software, challenging the models for long duration piloting, collecting hurricane data, and participating in the Challenger Glider mission, Silbo’s journey was action packed!

Learn about more upcoming webinars at www.teledynemarine.com/link
